Mission:

"To promote recreational cycling as an activity to enhance teamwork, camaraderie, fitness and to project a positive image of Plant Spartanburg to the community"

Why Cycling:

We believe that cycling is the ultimate exercise. It's non load-bearing so injuries are less common than with other popular sports, such as running. Plus, it's easy to cover significant distances so you can enjoy the scenery and terrain. Perhaps best of all, cycling allows you to modify intensity with incredible precision unmatched in most other sports. You can breathlessly blaze through your workout, cruise at a moderate fat-burning pace, or enjoy unimpeded conversation with friends while still burning more calories and covering much more ground than many other forms of exercise. Whether you enjoy leisurely family outings or club rides on the weekend you'll still burn significant amounts of calories. And, thanks to the joy of gliding over tarmac, you'll have so much fun you'll find it hard to call riding "exercise".

Join the Fun:

Group rides can be immensely rewarding. You get a great workout, cover more distance than you would alone and get to hang out with a great group of people. We might even have refreshments after our rides and enjoy conversation. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and join us! Remember, riding is more fun and safer when you ride with others! There's no better source of motivation, knowledge and camaraderie than your fellow riders.

Challenge Hincapie at Paris Mountain

So, you think you can ride with Greenville Tour de France cyclist George Hincapie?

Well here' a way you can give it a try (and, probably, fail horribly) if you want to test your riding skills. There is a 0.6 mile uphill climb at Paris Mountain State Park that he does in 3 minutes and 3 seconds.

"The percent grade of it averages 11 percent," said Ty Houck the park's manager. "And that's a steep - if not steeper - than a lot of the stages in the Tour de France."

Officials at the park saw Hincapie there regularly, and they saw him starting at one point, racing up the hill and redoing it over and over again. So they talked with him about it and decided to mark its beginning and end in December 2004 so others could try. Since then, it's been called the " Hincapie Challenge". And it's one of the spots Hincapie trains regularly.

Lots of people give it a whirl, Houck said, but few ever come close.  The closest he's heard of was someone doing it in about four minutes - that's only 57 seconds longer than Hincapie, right? Well, think about this:

That's 57 seconds longer over just 3,300 feet - and that's a lifetime in a bicycle race.
